County News

Lafayette County has welcomed a new IT director, Dwayne Bratcher, who stepped into the role at the first of this month. He follows longtime director Bob Opalko, who retired this summer after years of dedicated service. He says he’s looking forward to building on that foundation and helping the county expand how it uses technology to serve both employees and residents.
“I manage just about every aspect of technology for the county—anything computer- or information-related,” Dwayne explained. “Ultimately, my goal is to apply technology so that it works better for everyone.”
Dwayne’s passion for technology began in high school, when he assisted his school district’s IT team. He went on to build a career in educational technology, working for South Panola and Water Valley Schools, before seeking a new challenge in public service.
Priorities for Lafayette County
In just his first few weeks, Dwayne has already implemented a new work order system to streamline IT requests and provide more efficient support for county employees. Looking ahead, he’s focused on improving digital access to public services.
“I’d love for residents to be able to apply for things like construction permits online,” he said. “We should be using technology to remove barriers and make processes simpler—for both staff and the community.”
Outside the Office
Dwayne and his wife are the proud parents of three young boys, ages 8, 6, and 4, who keep them on their toes. When he’s not working, he is an avid photographer and videographer, specializing in outdoor content. His work has been featured in multiple national magazines and on the Outdoor Channel.
“I enjoy capturing the experience almost as much as being out in the field myself,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Dwayne believes technology should serve people by making everyday interactions more seamless and less time-consuming. His long-term vision for Lafayette County includes more accessible, convenient, and responsive digital services.
“People have a lot on their plates,” he said. “If we can use technology to help them get things done faster and with less hassle, that’s a win for everyone.”
