Riding ATVs Safely in Lafayette County

ATVs are a common way for people to get outdoors and enjoy Lafayette County. Areas like Sardis Lake draw riders from across the community, while others ride on private land closer to home. Wherever you ride, taking a few simple steps can help keep the experience safe.

“ATVing is a great way for people to get outdoors,” says Deputy Jake Moore. “We just want people to do it in a safe way.”

Before You Ride

  • Let someone know where you’ll be, especially if riding alone.
  • Bring a fully charged phone so someone can reach you or locate you if needed.
  • Make sure riders are of appropriate age. Most ATVs are intended for those 16 and older.

While You’re Riding

  • Wear a helmet while riding.
  • Be aware of others, especially in shared areas like Sardis Lake.
  • Avoid alcohol while riding.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings and don’t act aggressively.
  • Try to avoid risky maneuvers that could lead to rollovers or damage to your vehicle.

“We try to let people enjoy their freedoms in this county,” Moore says. “We just want people to do it in a safe way.”
