Storm Recovery Update – Thursday, January 29th

As Lafayette County moves through another day of recovery, we recognize that the ongoing disruptions have been exhausting for many families. Limited travel, utility challenges, and continued uncertainty have stretched on longer than anyone would want. County teams are putting their full energy into restoration efforts so residents can safely return to their normal routines as soon as possible.

County road crews and third-party contractors have been working around the clock since late Saturday evening to clear downed trees and debris across the county. This work is focused on opening access for emergency personnel, supporting utility restoration, and allowing for limited safe travel. While progress continues, hazardous conditions persist in many areas, including ice patches and downed power lines.

For safety reasons, residents are encouraged to stay home when possible and travel only if absolutely necessary. Keeping roads clear helps crews move equipment, reach affected areas more quickly, and continue restoration work safely throughout the county.

Many Lafayette County residents are without water, and maintaining access to water continues to be a priority. County teams are working closely with local water associations and have been providing generators where needed to support continued water service. Residents in need of water and food are encouraged to visit one of the county’s water distribution sites during operating hours, if they can safely travel. Updated distribution information will be shared tomorrow.

Shelter, food, and water are available for residents who need assistance at Lafayette County Elementary School, located at 71 F.D. Buddy E Pkwy in Oxford. Transportation to the shelter is available for those who need it. Residents can contact the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at (662) 234-6421 for assistance.

Recovery efforts extend beyond road clearing and debris removal, and the county continues to work with partners to ensure essential support is available across Lafayette County. The Mississippi National Guard is assisting with water and MRE distribution through multiple pod sites. National Guard aviation assets are also supporting urgent medical transfers, including patients who need to reach Memphis while state highways remain impacted by ice. Emergency services continue to operate across the county. The county is also working with local churches, charities, and community partners to support additional food and supply distribution.

We understand how long this recovery has felt for many residents, especially those who may feel isolated or uncertain about next steps. County teams and partners remain committed to restoring access, maintaining essential services, and supporting residents across Lafayette County. Updates will continue to be shared as conditions change and recovery efforts move forward.
